The Monstrous Ant-Hill of London (A3 Open Print)

£75.00

Open Edition Print.

A3 Unframed (420mm x 297mm).

Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by Book VII of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. The poet, newly arrived in London, beholds the city as a living spectacle: at once wondrous, overwhelming, and strange. He names it a “monstrous ant-hill,” a teeming hive of faces, wares, and unceasing motion, where the human stream becomes both fascinating and terrifying.

Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included as a part of an authentication certificate included with each print:

Rise up, thou monstrous ant-hill on the plain
Of a too busy world! Before me flow,
Thou endless stream of men and moving things!
Thy every-day appearance, as it strikes—
With wonder heightened, or sublimed by awe—
On strangers, of all ages; the quick dance
Of colours, lights, and forms; the deafening din;
The comers and the goers face to face,
Face after face; the string of dazzling wares,
Shop after shop, with symbols, blazoned names...

Printed on a high quality 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, The Monstrous Ant-Hill of London offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Editions series.
