The Vision of Sarum's Plain (A3 Open Print)

£75.00

Open Edition Print.

A3 Unframed (420mm x 297mm).

Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by Wordsworth’s vision of Sarum’s vast, open plain in Book XIII of the 1850 Prelude. As the young poet imagines a neolithic figure wandering the windswept downs and pale, unending roads, the present seems to thin. Time slips backward, and the landscape stirs with figures from an ancestral past: Britons moving across the wold in wolf-skin and stone.

Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included as a part of an authentication certificate included with each print:

...To a hope
Not less ambitious once among the wilds
Of Sarum’s Plain, my youthful spirit was raised;
There, as I ranged at will the pastoral downs
Trackless and smooth, or paced the bare white roads
Lengthening in solitude their dreary line,
Time with his retinue of ages fled
Backwards, nor checked his flight until I saw
Our dim ancestral Past in vision clear;
Saw multitudes of men, and, here and there,
A single Briton clothed in wolf-skin vest,
With shield and stone-axe, stride across the wold.

Printed on a high quality 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, The Vision of Sarum's Plain offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Editions series.
