Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by a famous ‘spot of time’ from Book I of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. Wordsworth the boy pushes out onto a still lake, only to feel the mountain above him rise and gather force. In that charged moment, nature presses itself into his imagination with overwhelming power, turning a brief act of mischief into a formative encounter that stays with him for life.
Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included as a part of an authentication certificate included with each print:
One summer evening (led by her) I found
A little boat tied to a willow tree
Within a rocky cove, its usual home.
Straight I unloosed her chain, and stepping in
Pushed from the shore. It was an act of stealth
And troubled pleasure, nor without the voice
Of mountain-echoes did my boat move on;
Leaving behind her still, on either side,
Small circles glittering idly in the moon,
Until they melted all into one track
Of sparkling light.
Printed on a high quality 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, the Boat Stealing Scene offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Editions series.
