Skating on a Frozen Lake

£3.00

A6 Fine Art Postcard.

Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by Book I of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. The image captures the exhilaration of a winter evening, when the poet, with company, skates upon the frozen lake. The scene is one of rapture: steel blades ringing against polished ice, voices echoing through the cold, the company of youth transformed into a chase across darkness and snow.

Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included on the reverse side of the postcard:

It was a time of rapture! Clear and loud
The village clock tolled six,—I wheeled about,
Proud and exulting like an untired horse
That cares not for his home. All shod with steel,
We hissed along the polished ice in games
Confederate, imitative of the chase
And woodland pleasures,—the resounding horn,
The pack loud chiming, and the hunted hare.
So through the darkness and the cold we flew,
And not a voice was idle.

Printed on 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, Skating on a Frozen Lake offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Edition series.
