The Shepherd as Mythic Power

£3.00

A6 Fine Art Postcard.

Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by Book VIII of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. In this vision, the shepherd transcends the pastoral and becomes elemental: a solitary figure striding through fog, his flock looming like Greenland bears, his form lit in sudden radiance by the sinking sun. Half-shadow, half-revelation, the shepherd is glimpsed as a figure of myth.

Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included on the reverse side of the postcard:

When up the lonely brooks on rainy days
Angling I went, or trod the trackless hills
By mists bewildered, suddenly mine eyes
Have glanced upon him distant a few steps,
In size a giant, stalking through thick fog,
His sheep like Greenland bears; or, as he stepped
Beyond the boundary line of some hill-shadow,
His form hath flashed upon me, glorified
By the deep radiance of the setting sun:
Or him have I descried in distant sky,
A solitary object and sublime, above all height!

Printed on 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, The Shepherd As Mythic Power offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Edition series.
