First Sighting of the Derwent

£3.00

A6 Fine Art Postcard.

Adapted from an original charcoal drawing, this design is inspired by Part I of William Wordsworth’s 1799 version of The Prelude. Depicting a mother and child on the banks of the Derwent, the image traces the poet’s first awakening to nature’s guiding presence. The drawing captures an intimate moment of encounter—both tender and elemental—when the “spot of time” becomes a beginning, a first sensing of freedom, air, and possibility.

Wordsworth’s own lines shape the spirit of the work, and are included on the reverse side of the postcard:

For this didst thou
O Derwent, travelling over the green plains
Near my "sweet birth-place,” didst thou beauteous Stream
Make ceaseless music through the night and day,
Which with its steady cadence tempering
Our human waywardness, composed my thoughts
To more than infant softness, giving me,
Among the fretful dwellings of mankind,
A knowledge, a dim earnest of the calm
Which Nature breathes among the fields and groves?

Printed on 300gsm Fresco Gesso textured cardstock, First Sighting of the Derwent offers an accessible way to collect and share one of the first designs in the Prelude Edition series.
